Water Services Corporation (WSC), the utility responsible for managing drinking water and wastewater across the Maltese Islands, has awarded SUEZ a new five-year contract to oversee the smart metering service for water consumption. This contract, extending the longstanding partnership between WSC and SUEZ until 2029, integrates the ON’connect digital platform, featuring advanced WIZE technology.

The Maltese Archipelago, with its Mediterranean climate and an influx of over 2 million tourists annually, faces demographic pressures that require careful water resource management. Recognising these challenges, WSC initiated the nationwide rollout of smart water meters back in 2009.

As of now, over 310,000 smart meters have been installed across the islands, covering more than 96% of the region. These meters generate high-value data, which is processed through the ON’connect solution provided by SUEZ’s Digital Solutions division. The solution enables customers throughout Malta to access detailed water consumption data and receive alerts through a dedicated portal. On average, nearly 3,500 notifications are sent each month to inform customers of abnormal consumption, allowing them to reduce both water waste and utility costs.

In addition to enhancing customer service, this system allows WSC to optimise the water network’s performance, quickly address any issues, and mitigate leaks. The data collected also aids in improving WSC’s operational, commercial and environmental performance, reducing Non-Revenue Water.

Karl Cilia, the CEO of WSC, expressed his satisfaction with the partnership saying: “This renewed collaboration with SUEZ highlights the value that smart metering brings to our operations. We’ve seen clear improvements in efficiency, helping us manage water resources effectively and offer better service to our customers while tackling the critical issue of water conservation in Malta.”

Patricia Villoslada, the SVP of SUEZ Digital Solutions, shared her excitement about the continued partnership by saying: “We are proud to extend our collaboration with WSC, as their renewed trust confirms the continued success and performance of our smart metering service. Since our first pilot in 2009, our solutions have helped improve Malta’s water management, positioning it as a model of smart water use and sustainable preservation.”
