A global solution for multi-country IoT deployments

The mobile cellular connectivity market has standardised on roaming as a simple mechanism that provides connectivity at home and abroad. Today, millions of Internet of Things (IoT) devices use the same mechanism to connect to networks across the world allowing devices to travel between countries – such as shipping containers – and for manufacturers to create a single product with a single SIM that can access connectivity globally.

Identiv leads Digital Product Passport adoption with NFC tech

Identiv has taken a role in driving the adoption of NFC-based Digital Product Passports (DPPs). On November 6, 2024, Identiv, in collaboration with NFC Forum, STMicroelectronics and custom skateboard designer BoardPusher, will host a webinar focused on the critical role of NFC technology in advancing sustainability efforts and the implementation of the Digital Product Passport.

Driving the future of sustainability through DPPs

The European Union’s DPP initiative is designed to enhance transparency and accountability throughout the lifecycle of a product, from production to recycling. Identiv’s NFC-powered IoT solutions enable products to store and share vital information such as origin, composition, environmental impact and recycling options, providing businesses and consumers with easy access to verified sustainability data.

“Identiv’s commitment to sustainability through IoT innovation is key to our collaboration with STMicroelectronics, BoardPusher and the NFC Forum,” said Amir Khoshniyati, the executive vice president and general manager at Identiv. “We believe NFC technology is the future of Digital Product Passports, offering a way for brands to provide full transparency and for consumers to make informed, eco-conscious choices.”

As sustainability becomes an increasingly important priority worldwide, the DPP is emerging as a pivotal tool for increasing transparency and accountability. For DPP implementation, NFC tags offer significant advantages, including increased data storage, enhanced security and user interaction. NFC tags can be embedded within products, protecting the data and offering a secure way to transfer information between the product and an NFC-enabled device.

NFC Forum executive director, Mike McCamon, said, “Using NFC Forum technologies for DPP is leveraging a familiar technology already in billions of devices, which will be key to achieving sustainability. Companies like Identiv and STMicroelectronics are paving the way for the adoption of DPP solutions through their corporate initiatives and as Sponsor members of the NFC Forum.”

NFC can enhance product transparency, sustainability and traceability, helping brands meet evolving regulatory and consumer demands.

BoardPusher is harnessing Identiv’s NFC-enabled DPP solutions to connect each of its skateboards to detailed sustainability data stored on the blockchain. This initiative allows BoardPusher to offer full transparency into the materials and processes used, reinforcing their commitment to eco-conscious practices.

“As a brand committed to both creativity and sustainability, we’re thrilled to be part of this initiative with Identiv and STMicroelectronics,” said Lucas Bond, the founder and partner at BoardPusher. “At BoardPusher, we’re exploring NFC technology to connect each custom skateboard to detailed sustainability data on the blockchain, offering complete transparency and traceability.

NFC technology in a DPP ecosystem can enhance product traceability, foster consumer knowledge and trust, whilst driving operational efficiency, enabling brands to deliver on their product sustainability goals.

The “NFC & NDPP – Powering the Digital Product Passport” webinar brings together global leaders to explore how NFC can accelerate the adoption and implementation of DPPs. The webinar will be held on November 6, 2024, at 9:00 AM ET. To attend, please register here.

HelixIntel improves PropertyOS CMMS platform with HSB IoT sensors

HelixIntel has announced the integration of HSB IoT sensor technology with its CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) platform, PropertyOS. The combination empowers users with real-time insights into environmental conditions, system performance, and automated work orders. The upgrades to PropertyOS, enhance maintenance management and improve asset reliability.

The fusion of HSB IoT sensor data with CMMS capabilities marks a significant leap forward in maintenance management. By incorporating data from sensors that detect moisture, heat, and other critical metrics, HelixIntel’s PropertyOS platform now offers unparalleled visibility and control over facility operations.

Users can monitor sensor readings via an intuitive dashboard to help predict equipment failures and prevent them from happening. This integration facilitates proactive maintenance, enhances asset performance, and minimises costly downtime. Alerts can automatically trigger customised workflows as designed by users. Tasks are then assigned to the appropriate personnel, and all aspects of the work orders are tracked from inception through completion.

“IoT sensors bring a new dimension to our CMMS platform,” Jon DeWald, CEO of HelixIntel, highlights the impact of these advancements. “By leveraging real-time HSB sensor data, we enable our users to take proactive measures, ensure equipment reliability, and promote operational efficiency. This reduces operational cost and enhances cap ex flexibility by extending the life of critical assets.”

In addition to IoT, PropertyOS enriches asset data with equipment photos, open work items, manufacturers and more, generating comprehensive digital records. These records help managers spot trends and coordinate maintenance teams more effectively. With the integration of predictive analytics, potential equipment failures may be identified before they occur, enhancing decision-making and maintenance planning to ensure optimal asset performance.

“Working together, HelixIntel’s integration of HSB IoT sensor data into its CMMS platform, PropertyOS, represents a pioneering step towards smarter, more efficient maintenance management,” said John Riggs, chief technology officer and senior vice president of Applied Technology Solutions for HSB. “By harnessing the power of real-time data and automated workflows, HelixIntel is driving new standards in asset management and operational excellence.”

HelixIntel revolutionises facility management with ‘forward-thinking’ solutions. PropertyOS simplifies facility management by seamlessly handling unlimited equipment, supplies, and inventory. Its cutting-edge Predict and Prevent Engine optimises operations, improve asset reliability, and mitigates risks for organisations and partners.

TPG Telecom wins smart meter deal with South East Water

TPG Telecom has secured a large smart metering rollout in Australia through a 10-year deal to manage one million narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) smart meters for South East Water in Victoria. The project will replace mechanical water meters with NB-IoT digital meters, helping to save water and money for South East Water’s 1.7 million customers residing in their service area from Port Melbourne through to Portsea and across towards Gippsland.

Deployed across South East Water’s 27,000km pipe network, the new, digital water meters will revolutionise water management in the region, with an estimated five billion litres of water saved annually through enhanced network operation and customer leak detection. The digital meters will enable customers to track and manage their water consumption using daily updated information, helping them identify usage spikes and providing greater insights into household and commercial water use.

The connected digital meters will also help South East Water and its customers identify leaking taps and appliances, faulty irrigation systems, and identify behavioural change opportunities to reduce water use and save customers money on their water bills.

“We are excited about our partnership with TPG Telecom and the cost savings and sustainable benefits digital meters will bring to customers, community and the environment,” Mark Elvins, South East Water Acting General Manager Digital Utility, said in a media statement. “As we look to the future, we need to build resilience into Australia’s water network to continue to respond to the challenges of water scarcity, a changing climate and growing population, with TPG Telecom we can now do that.”

TPG Telecom has developed end-to-end IoT solution combining NB-IoT connectivity, SIM and device management to enable deployment of smart meters at scale. This allows South East Water to seamlessly and securely connect the NB-IoT smart meters, reduce costs and security risks, and provide the critical monitoring and enhanced coverage needed for its extensive network of water meters and pipe network.

“TPG Telecom is proud to be at the forefront of NB-IoT deployments with this significant advancement in water resource management, none of which would have been possible without the innovation and thought leadership of South East Water,” said Chris Russo, TPG Telecom general manager for enterprise and government customer sales and Solutions. “This significant rollout demonstrates our commitment to innovation and customer service excellence and will provide South East Water with the insights and capability it needs to better manage water use for its customers and the environment.”
