Iridium makes strides in NB-IoT NTN with 3GPP release 19 inclusion

Iridium Communications has announced that the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) accepted Iridium’s request to extend the functionality of Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) into the Work Plan for 3GPP Release 19 as an official Work Item. This will pave the way for Iridium’s satellite service to be accessible via industry standard chipsets, furthering the company’s progress in developing and deploying its newest service, Iridium NTN Direct, over the Iridium Network. 3GPP Release 19 is currently scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2025. Rohde & Schwarz and Sony validate NTN NB-IoT device with advanced testing

In collaboration with Sony, Rohde & Schwarz has validated and verified Sony Altair’s device for its NTN NB-IoT capability. Using the advanced R&S CMW500 mobile radio tester platform from Rohde & Schwarz, Sony was able to verify all 3GPP defined RF parameters on their chipset in an interactive testing mode, in both geostationary orbit (GEO) and geosynchronous orbit (GSO). The company also validated the released protocol conformance test cases (PCT) for compliance, demonstrating exceptional performance and reliability of the Sony device. Additionally, both companies have committed to completing Skylo’s certified test plan on the R&S CMW500 as part of the carrier acceptance program. (more…)

Anritsu validates NTN NB-IoT protocol conformance tests on 5G NR platform

Anritsu Corporation has announced that the first non-terrestrial networks narrowband Internet of Things (NTN NB-IoT) Protocol Conformance Tests have been validated on the 5G NR Mobile Device Test Platform ME7834NR powered by the Sony Semiconductor Israel (Sony)’s Altair device.

NTN NB-IoT is a key IoT feature that is useful in cases where the devices need to be deployed in remote regions without terrestrial cell network coverage. This is especially useful for asset tracking in maritime, logistics, mining, automotive, and other areas.

“3GPP Release 17 which is described as the next stage for 5G and LTE, NTN enables new use cases and monetization opportunities for vertical industry segments,” said Kameda Keiji, a general manager of mobile solutions division at Anritsu. “We are proud that our collaboration with Sony enables us to help the industry validate the new features quickly to market and enable certifications in GCF/PTCRB to bring certified devices to enable new applications.”

The conformance tests are defined by 3GPP in TS 36.523-1 corresponding to core requirements in TS 36.331 and have been submitted to 3GPP Radio Access Network Working Group 5 (RAN WG5) by Anritsu.

“We are thrilled about our partnership with Anritsu,” said Christophe Flechelle, GM of France and system engineering director at Sony Semiconductor Israel. “By establishing a certification program for NTN, we’re paving the way for faster integration of crucial satellite technologies into tracking devices and wearables.”

Flechelle added that this collaboration marks a significant step towards technological advancement and widespread adoption in the industry.
