Helbiz, a global provider in micro-mobility, has launched its safe and innovative e-bikes in Washington, D.C. after having been awarded a one-year permit by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to service all the communities within America’s capital. An initial fleet of e-bikes will be on the streets with the full fleet of 2,000 U.S.-assembled e-bikes rolling out strategically in the first half of 2020.
“Washington, D.C. is our first e-bike fleet in the United States, and we’re excited to help District residents and visitors get from point A to point B in a safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable way,” said Salvatore Palella, founder and CEO of Helbiz.
“We look forward to working closely with mayor Muriel Bowser, DDOT director Jeff Marootian and through our various community programmes, to help expand safe alternative mobility options and to grow the local economy, foster talent and develop career opportunities in the District.”
Last month, Helbiz was selected from a highly competitive field of applicants due to its commitment to safe and responsible deployment, as well as its innovative technology and workforce development approach. The company opened a D.C.-based office and warehouse to run its operations on-the-ground, employing a full-time team to ensure its fleet is charged, repaired and well-maintained.Helbiz is hiring rapidly in the area and will launch the Helbiz Apprenticeship Programme to provide career pathway opportunities in the high-demand mobility industry.
The company will also hire District residents as part-time employees as “Ward Liaisons,” who will serve as part of the company’s commitment to more robust community engagement and safe riding education. For low-income District residents, Helbiz will offer its Helbiz Access Programme, which provides unlimited free rides up to 30 minutes for District residents enrolled in SNAP, TANF, Housing Choice Voucher Programme and other low-income services.
“Our e-bikes are proudly assembled in the United States, using innovative new materials and technologies to ensure a safe and comfortable ride throughout the District,” continued Palella. “We look forward to being a part of everyone’s daily commutes and leisurely rides as we strive to make D.C. more eco-friendly and accessible.”
Users can download the Helbiz app on iOS and Android to instantly geolocate, rent and unlock e-bikes directly from their phones with a tap and simply park them at bike racks or at available designated parking hubs when finished with their ride. For additional information, click here.
