Boldyn Networks (Boldyn) is partnering with the City of Chesapeake, Virginia to deploy a city-owned private wireless network to support the city’s emerging Chesapeake Connects initiative and smart city strategy.

This project reflects Chesapeake’s long-term commitment to improving connectivity, supporting public safety, and accelerating the Chesapeake Connects program. Designed and managed by Boldyn, the city’s network will deliver secure, dedicated wireless services tailored to the operational needs of municipal departments, schools, libraries and first responders.

“Implementing an LTE private network allows us to enhance public safety, improve city infrastructure management, and provide reliable connectivity for critical services,” said Harvey Miller, a broadband development officer for the City of Chesapeake. “It empowers us to create a smarter, safer city where emergency responders and municipal operations can communicate seamlessly and efficiently.”

The private network includes a high-bandwidth CBRS overlay for fixed wireless broadband applications as well as a low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) to support Internet of Things (IoT) endpoints for smart city services, including:

“Through Chesapeake Connects, the city is a leading example of how local governments can harness innovation and leverage technology partners to better connect for, and with, their communities,” said Chris Zack, the senior vice president of wireless solutions for Boldyn Networks. “Boldyn has partnered with cities around the world to deploy private wireless networks and we wholeheartedly support the initiative’s mission to use technology infrastructure to deliver value and tangible benefits to the community.”

Boldyn brings modernised secure wireless connectivity to public works and traffic control, allowing upgraded low-latency connectivity. The network also uses Boldyn’s centralised cloud architecture to support multi-purpose applications for expanded uses for public safety, public internet access and Chesapeake student connectivity. Boldyn has proven expertise in mobile private networks with 130 deployments globally.

The private wireless network developed with Boldyn Networks is the latest innovation to emerge from Chesapeake Connects, an ambitious, city-led initiative to modernise the city’s digital infrastructure and expand access to fast, reliable connectivity. Supported in part by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, the initiative continues to deliver impactful solutions, with additional sites and services to be rolled out over the coming months.
