Ericsson and CTIA Certification press release

Ericsson and CTIA Certification, a globally recognised body for Internet of Things (IoT) device certification, has announced the ORION Cellular endpoint by Badger Meter is the first smart water device to be certified under the IoT Network Certified for Smart Connected Infrastructure program.

The IoT Network Certified for Smart Connected Infrastructure program empowers manufacturers to validate their devices’ suitability for critical infrastructure operations. The ORION Cellular endpoint was tested at Ericsson’s device and network testing lab facilities in Plano, Texas. The comprehensive testing protocol validates the device adheres to 3GPP, NIST and CTIA Certification standards in real-world network grid conditions.

With this certification, the ORION Cellular endpoint is now recognised as a benchmark for quality and security in connected infrastructure applications. This certification demonstrates a practical ability to provide a secure smart metering foundation for utilities and other smart water customers, looking not just at the device, but also at data transmission over wireless infrastructure and into the cloud software.

Badger Meter is committed to pushing the boundaries of device performance while adhering to industry standards for cybersecurity and network interoperability.

“ORION Cellular represents a significant milestone in the security of connectivity and critical infrastructure. This certification not only confirms the product’s ability to deliver in critical conditions but also reinforces our dedication to building secure and resilient water solutions,” said Randy Schultz, the senior engineer of product regulatory compliance at Badger Meter.

“At Ericsson, we are proud to provide a pathway for manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with the latest cybersecurity and network performance standards. This certification ensures that ORION Cellular is fully equipped to meet the complex needs of today’s smart critical infrastructure,” said Dana Jaber Diab, the vice president and the head of utilities at Ericsson Americas.

“As the demand for secure, reliable and adaptive connected solutions continues to grow, we understand that each innovation must contribute to the overall safety of critical infrastructure. Badger Meter is a prime example of an industry leader taking the initiative to ensure the future of smart water deployments is grounded in secure, critical infrastructure,” said Michelle James, the vice president of strategic industry programs at CTIA. “The certification of ORION Cellular is just one of many steps the company is taking to bolster the safety, resilience and innovation of critical infrastructure for smart water solutions around the globe.”

With the testing of ORION Cellular, Badger Meter sets a new bar for secure-by-design deployments highlighting how CTIA Certification standards are setting the foundation for IoT devices and connectivity powering today’s critical infrastructure.
