Arqiva has been selected by Affinity Water to roll out its smart metering infrastructure to cover 400,000 properties across the home counties plus parts of Essex, Kent and Surrey.

The 15-year contract, with rollout over the next five years, will bring all the benefits of smart metering to Affinity Water customers, including regular accurate readings which help identify trends in usage, reduce consumption and help to identify leaks.

The Arqiva network will utilise Diehl meters operating on LoRaWAN technology, delivered in partnership with Netmore Group.

Mike Smith, the executive director for the smart utilities networks at Arqiva, said the following about the selection: “This project is a testament to our ability to create targeted solutions for Utility organisations in collaboration with trusted partners. Fundamentally, smart metering is about enabling reliable, actionable data. Our track record in delivering the most comprehensive metering rollouts in the United Kingdom (UK) highlights our ability to focus on success for the customer and ultimately providing a comprehensive platform for further advances. This contract is not just a win for us, but a stepping stone to even greater opportunities for Affinity Water and its customers.”

Geordie Wilson, the head of smart metering at Affinity Water, also commented on the selection by saying: “This partnership with Arqiva marks a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering smarter, more efficient water services for our customers. By rolling out smart metering across our supply area, we’ll empower customers with the tools and data to better understand and manage their water usage, while also helping us to detect and address leaks faster. It’s a win-win for both our customers and the environment.”

This initiative is an essential part of Affinity Water’s ongoing efforts to reduce water loss, enhance infrastructure efficiency, and ensure a reliable, sustainable water supply for future generations. By embracing smart metering technology, Affinity Water are not only improving the way they monitor and manage water usage but also taking a proactive approach to address the increasing challenges of water stress in their region. The data provided by smart meters will help them identify leaks faster, reduce unnecessary water loss, and support customers in making informed decisions about their water consumption. Ultimately, this initiative plays a key role in Affinity Water’s commitment to long-term sustainability and environmental stewardship, benefiting both their customers and the wider community.
