The Entrust Datacard , a provider of reliable solutions identification technology and secure issuance, has completed its previously announced acquisition of nCipher Security , formerly of Thales, a business market hardware security modules (hardware security module, HSM).

The general-purpose HSM market is booming, boosted by global demand for more data and application security, enhanced encryption, and privacy regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the regulation of electronic identification services , authentication and trust (electronic identification, authentication and trust services, eIDAS). HSMs offer the highest levels of cryptographic security and are implemented to minimise network and cyber security risks posed by cloud services, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and other digital initiatives.

“We are delighted to complete this acquisition and bring nCipher’s exceptional talents and technologies to the Entrust Datacard portfolio. The need for access to secure networks and data integrity continues to multiply with the proliferation of mobile devices, cloud services, connected IoT devices and digital payments. The use of HSMs is expanding in all these fields. With nCipher now being part of our solution portfolio, customers will see benefits with our expanded offerings for the most sensitive and highest-end use cases, “said Todd Wilkinson, president and chief executive officer of Entrust Datacard.

General-purpose HSMs are the core component of Entrust Datacard solutions and an inherent part of the enterprise’s public key infrastructure (PKI) and secure sockets layer (SSL) security infrastructure infrastructure. Entrust Datacard will offer the nCipher solution with its managed and installed PKI offerings, and its IoT device lifecycle accreditation, authorisation and lifecycle management offerings.

By integrating Entrust Datacard, nCipher will be able to extend its compliance capabilities from trusted hardware to include trusted identities as well as its cloud capabilities to provide customers with more advanced solutions from Entrust Datacard’s secure hosting facilities.

“For nCipher, it’s a great pleasure to be part of Entrust Datacard’s talented team. This acquisition quickly expands the global presence of nCipher solutions and accelerates our ‘as-a-service’ offer strategy, “said Cindy Provin, executive director of nCipher Security.

“HSMs provide a foundation of confidence for enterprise applications such as PKI, blockchain, mobile payments and code signing. As a single company, Entrust Datacard is positioned to effectively protect our customers’ sensitive information and business applications as they implement new digital initiatives. ”

More than 300 nCipher employees are now integrated into the Entrust Datacard team. NCipher Security will continue to be based in Sunrise, Florida, with a cybersecurity development centre in Cambridge, UK, and a sales support centre in Hong Kong. Additional terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
