Cool IoT Use Cases: Iceland’s international airport expands its flow management solution
Market Overview
Airline passenger numbers continue to rise along with expectations, which start on arrival and continue through airport compounds. End-to-end flow management solutions are being deployed to address this multi-faceted challenge.
Problem
Iceland’s KeflavÃk International Airport is one of Europe’s fastest-growing tourist and transit destinations. In addition to monitoring passenger movements, the airport needed a solution that would help guide expansion plans and streamline operations in order to accommodate rapid passenger growth.
The players
Isavia, Iceland´s national airport and air navigation service provider. Veovo, who provided the flow management solution. The company’s software is used at more than 110 airports around the world.
The solution
The airport had implemented check-in and security processes that provide wait time and occupancy figures. In parallel, Veovo’s airport management system was deployed for operational visibility. The system’s technology comprises sensors and deep learning algorithms, which will be used to provide a comprehensive picture of how passengers move through the airport.
The airport now has a better understanding of how disruptions or changes affect behaviour as well as a detailed view of passenger movements, from the moment they arrive until boarding the plane. In addition, the airport will be able to extract any combination of data, both real-time and historic.
Business benefits
- Provide airport-wide 24/7 visibility of passenger flow
- Boost operational efficiency while improving passenger services
- Help guide the airport’s expansion plans
