Moxa building cybersecurity partnerships for smart rail
Rapid urbanisation is continuing to significantly increase the demand for rail transport not only in metropolitan areas but also for cross-nation transportation.
Moxa delivers flexible IP network infrastructures that are able to expand to deal with the rising number of passengers and ensure that operational efficiency is maintained.
Connected trains are vulnerable to cyber threats. Securing rail networks requires robust network communications with enhanced security functions and easy-to-use network management software. The most effective method of enhancing the security of devices is to ensure that they cannot have their settings altered in a way that puts the devices and ultimately the network at risk.
Cybersecurity experts view the IEC 62443 standard as the most relevant for securing devices on industrial networks. When designing a network, a good way to secure it is to use the defense-in-depth security architecture that is designed to protect individual zones and cells.
The first step that should be taken when building a defense-in-depth rail system is to segment networks so that the traffic can be isolated to protect against intentional cyberattacks or human error. After determining that the network devices and topology are secure, a network management policy needs to be established to ensure that system operators can see the entire security status overview of the network.
Moxa has an expansive product portfolio for train operators and system integrators that is designed in accordance with the EN 50155 standard. With solid field experience, we have deployed over 500 networks worldwide for CCTV, CBTC, TCMS, Passenger Wi-Fi, and condition monitoring systems.
As an IRIS-certified provider, we are committed to quality and have transitioned to IRIS Certification system rev. 03, which demonstrates our dedication to improving product quality and performance. We also actively participate in global rail industry associations, such as the IEC Technical Committee 9/WG 43. Furthermore, we are taking a role to ensure that rail technologies evolve to fulfill the ever-changing market demands.
