China’s ZTE 5G enables subsea VR video transmission and signs 5G and IoT partnership with Telenet
ZTE Corporation, an international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, is to unveil its remote control service for 5th Generation mobile virtual reality (5G VR) underwater vehicles at the 5G World Summit 2017, London.
Through VR real-time video transmission and wireless remote control, the demonstration will simulate underwater scenarios, such as offshore submarine scientific expeditions and maintenance, to showcase the breakthroughs of 5G application in underwater research and unmanned operations.
In the absence of high-bandwidth short-delay wireless transmission, professionals have to travel to a specific location for underwater expeditions and maintenance. However, in the deep sea and environments with strong wind and big waves, it is difficult for maintenance personnel and scientists to get close to the failure location, causing great difficulty in scientific research and maintenance.
Due to the narrow bandwidth and large delay in existing wireless networks, underwater HD video cannot be transmitted in real time. 5G networks featuring ultra-high bandwidth and short delay make VR services and real-time remote control available, involving the use of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in submarine expedition and underwater maintenance, substantially changing and enhancing the mode and value of wireless network services.
In addition to the demonstration of the remote control over 5G VR underwater vehicles, ZTE will also showcase its latest research and development (R&D) achievements in the 5G field, including a full range of 5G high-frequency and low-frequency pre-commercial base stations, a new generation of Pre5G Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) base stations, and 5G network and evolution solutions.
ZTE’s 5G experts will also deliver keynote speeches on network slicing and 5G air interfaces and share innovative viewpoints on 5G technologies.
ZTE works extensively with many industry partners to actively explore and create an open and harmonious ecosystem. ZTE has also joined groups such as the 5GIA and 5GAA, conducted jointly with Qualcomm and China Mobile low-frequency interoperability development testing (IoDT) meeting the 3GPP standards, and developed high-frequency equipment together with Intel, promoting sound development of the 5G ecosystem.
… and Telenet signs strategic partnership on 5G and IoT with ZTE
Meanwhile, in Brussels ZTE Corporation, reported that it has signed a strategic partnership on 5G and IoT with Belgium-based Telenet.
In a ceremony at the Castle Val-Duchesse in Brussels officiated by Belgian prime minister Charles Michel and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Telenet chief technology officer Micha Berger and ZTE senior vice president Xiao Ming signed the new agreement that expands the partnership between the two companies to cover future network innovations.
Telenet is the largest cable broadband service provider in Belgium, listed on the Euronext stock exchange under the ticker TNET, providing a range of digital television, fixed and mobile services to residential and business customers across Belgium and Luxembourg. Berger said: “We are happy to be engaged for a couple of months with ZTE. We are convinced this partnership will allow us to offer a top quality mobile network for existing and future needs all over Belgium.”
In August 2016, Telenet selected ZTE to upgrade its national mobile network, deploying ZTE’s world-class unified radio access network (Uni-RAN) technology. The network modernisation project not only resulted in major improvements in performance and service quality for Telenet subscribers but also gave the carrier enhanced capabilities to manage its operations.
ZTE helped Telenet replace 2G base stations and optimise 3G and 4G coverage, delivering increased network capacity for enhanced user experience for subscribers, and supporting the evolution to future network technologies.
With ZTE’s industry-leading technology, Telenet completed field tests and set a new European network speed record, achieving download speeds of 1.3 Gigabits per second, four times faster than existing 4G services.
Together with ZTE, Telenet is exploring technology solutions for IoT services and high capacity solutions using long-term evolution (LTE) Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and LTE broadcast solutions.
ZTE is committed to investments in research and development of core 5G technologies including Massive MIMO, multi-user shared access (MUSA) , filter-bank orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (FB-OFDM), Virtual Cell and network slicing.
The company is a member of over 70 standards organisations, alliances, and forums, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN), and IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group.
“This agreement provides a solid foundation for Telenet and ZTE to expand and strengthen the long-term partnership on the way to a new 5G era,” said Xiao.
